Just say Yes!

Inspired a bit by a quote I read by Richard Branson….

“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes—then learn how to do it later.”

Say yes, and then figure it out. I love it, what a great attitude! Often times I feel that amazing opportunities either pass us up or we consciously pass up because we are afraid. Now many of you would say, I am not afraid, well here is how fear sows up: fear in the form of reluctance, fear in the form of lack of faith in self or your support network, fear of being ridiculed or lose position, fear of failure.

Be not afraid. The world is ours to conquer and by going out and taking new opportunities you may discover new strengths or new paths that will ultimately lead you to greater heights or exposed to talents that lay dormant.

So what do you do if do say yes and you are in over your head? Here are a three tips:
  1. Dissect the project into bite-sized pieces. I meet people all the time that are overwhelmed with projects because they only look at the whole. If you look at the pieces individually, you might find it easier to handle or that you have already had experience in an area.
  2. If you find you are missing a skill set, learn it…fast! The internet of everything is your greatest resource; there are people out there who have published, blogged, etc. about pretty much the exact skill you want to develop.
  3. Ask for help. Hopefully you already have a mentor of some sort who will be able to help you sort through your new venture. Ask for help only, not for them to do it. Remember you have more capability than you think, they will just be there to help you catch what you may have missed or recognize where you need some work.
The world moves to fast to get pidgeon holed, we have to keep learning and growing. If someone thinks highly enough to offer you an amazing opportunity (this is a major compliment by the way, so be grateful) or if you feel you have what it takes to be awesome it, go for it. Some of the best achievements in the history of the world happened by unqualified dreamers who said ‘sure, why not…’

I agree; it's important to embrace opportunities and learn as we go.
